CBD Skin Care Products: Are They Worth the Hype?
It’s official: CBD has hit the shelves and is here to stay. But, what exactly is this little thing called CBD that’s been popping up in everything from kombucha and teas, to lip balms and skin care products? And, most importantly, are CBD oil and skincare a match made in heaven?
What is CBD?
CBD, or scientifically known as cannabidiol, is the non psychoactive, but highly medicinal, property in cannabis. To break it down really simply, there’s tons of phytocannabinoids in cannabis with one of them being THC. You know, the one that makes some uncontrollably laugh for hours on end, and makes others plummet into anxiety and paranoia. Well, THC’s cousin is CBD, which has zero psychoactive properties. CBD is the magical phytocannabinoids that helps people with parkisons, epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety and, of course, there are now CBD skin care products, too.
What does CBD do for skin?
Again, we’ll break this down very simply. The skin is the largest organ in the body and has the largest number of cannabinoids receptors. Cannabinoid receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system, which is basically the body’s own system of checks and balances that regulates basic bodily functions like pain, appetite, inflammation, sleep and, of course, skin functions like dryness and oilines.
So, how does CBD fit into all of this? Turns out, CBD has the same cannabinoid receptors as our skin. The sharing of CBD receptors allows the skin to absorb CBD swimmingly, which positively affects the endocannabinoid system to carry out its overseeing of bodily functions even better.
What are the CBD skin care benefits?
Ok, so we got the basics of CBD down, but what’s with all the hype around CBD skin care?
The endocannabinoid system also handles bacteria levels, inflammation, lipid production, histamine and skin proliferation. Because CBD is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, the benefits of CBD oil in skin care products includes regulating all of these bodily functions that, when out of balance, can lead to things like acne, eczema and psoriasis.
So, if you’re looking for holistic skin care for eczema, acne, psoriasis or skin inflammation, CBD sounds like the perfect way to go.
Great, sign me up!
Before you make CBD skin care a staple in your medicine cabinet, it’s worth knowing that since the CBD skin care market is so new, these benefits aren’t completely backed up by concrete and sound science. The CBD research that has been done has pointed to all of these benefits, which is great, but the legal regulation and quality regulation of CBD and cannabis are still iffy and in the beginning stages. Basically, if you’re going to purchase CBD skin care products, then be sure to do your research and go with a brand you trust.
OK, but what about the alternatives to CBD?
If you’re not onboard with CBD fully, then there’s other plant-based skin care products that will get the job done just as well (or, even better!).
Rose water
Rose water also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help your skin against acne, eczema and skin irritation. It also is a great anti-aging agent since it helps prevent the breakdown of protein and collagen in the skin.
If you have acne, eczema and inflammation on your body other than your face, then we highly recommend using our Himalayan Rose Body Scrub.
Squalane Oil
Squalane oil is packed with anti-inflammatory properties which helps with eczema and skin irritation. It also mimics the way our skin produces oil, which helps skin elasticity and cell regeneration to promote healthier and younger looking skin. Just a few more things--it’s an antioxidant, protects against UV damage and regulates bacteria in the skin, which is great for those with acne!
Our Glow Facial Serum works wonders and, of course, is made with magical squalane oil.
Evening Primrose Oil
Evening Primrose is an essential fatty acid that helps regenerate cell membranes and control hormonal imbalances. Because acne, eczema and psoriasis are affected by hormones, Evening Primrose Oil can help balance everything out and work against these skin conditions.
Again, our Glow Facial Serum is amazing and is also packed with skin restoration ingredients including Evening Primrose Oil.
Rosehip Oil
Rosehip oil is packed with tons of vitamins, antioxidants and omega fatty acids that will work wonders for your skin, including the treatment of acne. Check out our Renewal Mask to get rosehip oil in your natural skin care routine.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is packed with antioxidants that fight against UV damage and is also a great anti-aging agent. If you want to get the ultimate vitamin C skin care package, then we recommend using our Renewal Mask, Revive Facial Toner, and Glow Facial Serum--in that order!
