Why Organic Skincare Matters

I get it, in the heat of the moment sometimes our brain always want to go with the cheaper product. We have bills, rent, student loans and car payments to make. If we can save a few dollars, we will.

But, what is truly the cost? Is saving a few extra dollars worth the cheaper product? And, why is that product so cheap anyway? Are organic skin care products really worth the price?

In short, yes, they’re definitely worth the price, but why? Let’s layout why organic skin care matters and what exactly you are paying for.

Chemical free

Similar to organic produce, buying organic skin care products eliminates the amount of chemicals being introduced to your body. Our skin is the largest organ and absorbs what we apply to it topically, so all of those chemicals in those skin care products will absorb through your skin and into your bloodstream.

Tragically and unfortunately, the United States hasn’t followed in the path of the European Union in the process of banning unsafe and harmful chemicals in day-to-day products. To put this into perspective, the EU has outlawed 1,300 chemicals in cosmetics while the US has banned only 11. Eleven.

Generic skin care products in the United States should really come with a “buyer beware” label. With extremely lax regulation, cosmetic companies are able to pump their products with harmful, untested chemicals without being legally required to disclose the list of chemicals in their products. So, when you buy organic and plant-based cosmetics, you’re paying for peace of mind knowing your skin care products aren’t derived from a harmful chemical induced science experiment.

Non environmental

Using natural skin care products not only reduces the amount of harmful chemicals introduced to your body, but also helps the environment avoid these harmful ingredients, too. With factory run-off, the production of these non-organic cosmetic products allows these harmful chemicals into the environment that soaks into the ground soil and into the air.

So, what’s the difference between organic and natural skin care products?

If you’ve ever been confused about the difference between natural and organic labels, then you’re not alone. So, what exactly do these labels mean?

Natural

The best natural skin care products can be deceiving just from their title alone. Because cosmetics labeled with “natural” aren’t regulated by the government, there isn’t any criteria needed to label a product as “natural” and could solely be a marketing ploy.

The best way to check the safety of natural skin care products is to read the ingredients. Ingredients are listed in order of their use from highest to lowest. With a swift Google search, you can find out which ingredients in those natural skin care products are harmful.

Organic

Any product labeled as organic means the ingredients have been farmed without pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and chemical fertilizers. An organic label is heavily regulated and earned by following a strict guideline of production. So, you know that you are getting exactly what you paid for when shopping organic.

While buying organic is pretty straight forward, there’s a couple different labels under the organic umbrella. Products listed as simply “organic” are made of 70-95 percent organic ingredients while “certified organic” means the ingredients are 95-99 percent organic.

While making the switch to organic skin care products may seem like a daunting task, it isn’t as complicated as it may seem. Start off by switching one product at a time and, eventually, your cosmetic collection will grow to include wholesome, clean and organic plant-based skin care products.
